PROJECT STATUS: Complete MIX-RANGE OF BOATS: 20th March 2019 SIZE OF PROJECT: 495 m2
Snøhetta began as a collaborative architectural and landscape workshop and has remained true to its trans-disciplinary way of thinking since then. Our work strives to enhance our sense of surroundings, identity and relationship to others and the spaces we inhabit.
DESCRIPTION
Snøhetta designed Under, Europe’s first underwater restaurant on the Norwegian coastline, where marine species flourish in abundance. The project resulted in the combination of a unique Michelin-star restaurant, only working with fresh locally sourced marine produce, that also doubles as a research centre for biodiversity and marine life, to increase environmental awareness.
SUSTAINABILITY & INNOVATION
Sustainability is central to the project, by giving restaurant guests greater insights into marine life, raising awareness, while also making Under an extra exciting project for marine biologists. Snøhetta designed Under as a sunken building that fully integrates with its marine environment. The concrete was left exposed externally, forming a rough finish, ideal for algae and molluscs to latch onto, aiming to function as an artificial reef. Three years after its completion, nature has fully embraced and inhabited the building shell.
